Hamblenet - Virus Problems

Viruses are programs designed to replicate and spread from computer to computer. The main method of infection is by an email attachment though a few of the later versions have installed themselves onto computers after entering through unsecured ports whilst connected to the Internet

Many of the viruses are just tedious nuisances but some have a destructive payload and in extreme case have been known to delete data from the PC after running for a number of days. Whatever type they are, you don't want them on your computer.

The emails you receive via hamblenet.net will be checked by the anti-virus software on our mail servers. This is kept up to date by regular updates but there is always a possibility that a new strain might get through to your machine so we recommend that you maintain an up to date copy of a reputable Anti-virus program.

We use Bullguard Anti-Virus in house and have found it to be reliable and easy to set up and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg for the annual update fee.

Contact our sister company Westfield Computer Services if you would like a copy.

Sasser Virus

The sasser, MsBlaster and Welchia viruses infected Windows PC's that were connected to the Internet without a firewall and without the latest Windows Update.

It really pays to keep your version of Windows up to date by downloading and installing the latest updates.

If you are using Windows XP then there is a built in firewall. If you have SP1 it's not enabled by default. In SP2 it is enabled and is became part of the security package.

Check yours by right clicking your dial-up or network connection, select properties and then the Advanced tab. Just tick the box to protect your computer from programs on the Internet.
