Hamblenet - Frequently Asked Questions
If I sign-up for Hamblenet can I still receive emails from my Freeserve account?
Yes you can, you won't be able to send emails via Freeserves outgoing SMTP server but you will be able to send them from Hamblenet. What most people do is let Hamblenet configure their email so that the default is Hamblenet and then change the SMTP address on their Freeserve account to be mail.hamblenet.net. Then while their friends get used to their email address change they can receive both lots of email. When they are happy that everybody is using their new email address they simply remove their Freeserve account details. This also applies to other email accounts such as Tiscali, Tesconet etc.
How well does your anti-spam work?
We would like to say 100% but unfortunately preventing delivery of spam is a very complicated process. What some people perceive as Spam might be useful to another so we can't be too rigorous. What we do is to remove anything that is globally considered to be Spam, there are lists of the senders available, which we check incoming mail against. These lists are updated continuously as new spammers appear. This will remove most of the particularly offensive messages but will unfortunately not prevent all Spam
We have found Ella quite a clever method for reducing spam on the end users PC. Check out "Spam Problems" on the menu for more details of how to obtain a copy.
How well does your anti-virus work?
Again we would like to say 100% and with viruses it's probably fairly close. The virus definitions used by our software are updated in real time and as a result we trap the vast majority of viruses. There is always a possibility that a virus is released and propogated before the virus definitions get updated and that is why we always recommend that you also install reputable anti-virus software on your PC and keep it up to date with regular definition downloads.
Can I read my emails when I'm on holiday?
As long as you can access the Web, say from an Internet Cafe or a Library you can use our Web based email client to view your emails. On the Hamblenet Home Page click on "Web Email Client". This will open a form where you can enter your email address "yourname@hamblenet.net" and your password. You will then be able to read your emails, delete those that you don't need, send emails, set up an address book, even have your own personal appointment calendar. Just part of the Hamblenet service.
